Service Learning

Some very important learning for the students of St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School takes place outside of the classroom as they participate in a variety of service opportunities. A key part of our Catholic identity calls for us to be caring Christians and to do good works for the benefit of others. Highlighted here are just a few of the service projects that help our students help others.
Service Learning: NJHS Collects Treats for the Troops

Service Learning: NJHS Collects Treats for the Troops

As a special service to those who protect and defend our freedoms, the National Junior Honor Society coordinated a Treats for the Troops Collection. The NJHS collected Halloween candy from students and encouraged students to write cards and letters to soldiers. The candy was then delivered to Shorewood Family Dental who generously shipped the candy to Operation Gratitude. Operation Gratitude sends care packages to our soldiers overseas. Thanks to the generosity of our St. Als/St. Pat's students, five large boxes of candy were donated. Many students also wrote cards and letters to the soldiers and those were also sent along with the candy treats!
Service Learning: Celtics Care for Others

Service Learning: Celtics Care for Others

Our Student Council President first identified the Watts of Love organization and suggested it would be a worthy focus for a Student Council community outreach activity. Representatives from the organization were invited to our school to discuss the need for safe and cost-effective lighting that uses the sun's energy for impoverished areas worldwide. The Council Vice President of Student Council Affairs coined our campaign theme: Do the Bright Thing, Donate to Watts of Love. Our school community raised over $600.00 during the campaign. This will supply 12 families with lights.
Service Learning: Summer Helpers at Lemont Library

Service Learning: Summer Helpers at Lemont Library

St Alphonsus / St. Patrick School students continue to live out the Celtic Mission to serve their school and community even during the summer break. Many of our students have helped others by volunteering at the Lemont Public Library. Our students volunteered their services for the "Reading by Design" program. The students tallied the reading logs for young summer library patrons and performed other service for the program. Our Celtics live our mission year round!
Service Learning: Catholic Relief Service Rice Bowl Project

Service Learning: Catholic Relief Service Rice Bowl Project

We prayed, fasted, and gave alms — now we celebrate Easter joy! Our Lenten journey with the Catholic Relief Service Rice Bowl ends as we encounter our risen Lord. We reflect on our brothers and sisters with whom we have walked in India, Zambia, El Salvador, Mexico, Ethiopia, and Hawaii. We commit to bring Easter joy to each person we meet in our daily lives. Our community changed lives this Lent. We collected $454.07 to donate to the program this year.
Service Learning: National Junior Honor Society Service Projects

Service Learning: National Junior Honor Society Service Projects

One of the hallmarks of the National Junior Honor Society is Service. They take this mandate seriously and seek to serve not only our own school community but also the wider community. This year they have participated in a Feed My Starving Children Mobile Packing effort, collected surplus Halloween candy for service men and women, collected money and food for the Souper Bowl of Caring, and so much more! This caring and energetic group of young people set a great example of Christian service for all of us.
